Steps to a sustainable school

Working to make your school more sustainable and creating a climate action plan can seem like a daunting task. We’ve broken the process down into simple steps:
Staff meeting

Meet with your team

  1. Get your eco leaders team together – passionate staff, a member of SLT, the business manager, the site manager, a school governor, a member of the catering team, students.
  2. Agree your different roles in the group.
  3. Discuss ideas about what you would like to achieve.

You may want to look at training to gain confidence.

Climate ambassadors

Recruit student climate leaders

In your eco leader team, decide who will work with the student climate leaders.

Decide a time for meetings and how they will be structured.

  • Will you join the Eco-Schools Green Flag programme?
  • How will you recruit new students? Posters, assemblies, advertise in the school newsletter, send an email home?
Count your carbon.

Conduct an audit of the school

Identify areas which need improvement. You may have ideas already.

Eco-Schools provides an audit tool called Count your Carbon.

Visit the climate action plan resources page for other resources.

Your climate action plan should cover 4 main areas:

Chimneys from electricity generation.

Decarbonisation

Reduce carbon emissions by reducing energy use in the school, creating less waste across the school day, saving water, and promoting active travel.

Seaford beach defences.

Adaptation and resilience

Understand and plan for the risks to your setting from climate change and extreme weather events such as water and resource shortages, storms, flooding and heatwaves. Look at ways to share skills and resources.

Biodiversity

Create habitats and spaces for nature in the school grounds, raise awareness of the importance of nature, get students outdoors, composting.

Climate education and green careers

Incorporate climate issues into the curriculum, providing extra-curricular activities. Promote green careers, linking to local green career and training providers.

Creating your climate action plan

A climate action plan should cover actions that can be achieved during the year.

  • Your steering group should identify actions you feel are a priority to achieve this year, who will lead on each action, and the timescale for this.
  • Create a separate list for actions you would like to address in future years.
  • View our Climate Action Plan template with examples to help with action ideas.

Be realistic with your target. If you want to improve the school’s insulation, have achievable goals like getting quotes for the work or looking for grants available.

Advice for schools from East Sussex County Council

Visit the East Sussex County Council website for the resources they offer to schools including East Sussex Climate Change Charter for Education Settings which provides advice and links to support a school climate action plan. They have also produced a Climate Change and Sustainability guide for governors and you can sign up to their forum for School Sustainability Leads.

If your school is part of an academy trust, find the support they can offer on their website or portal.

Celebrate your achievements

Publicise your achievements to staff, students and parents!

This helps keep up momentum for projects, could help to recruit more support and improve behavioural change amongst the school community.

Many students can be feeling eco-anxiety – knowing their school is doing something can help this and they may want to join in.
