Marine

Living close to the sea gives us opportunities to learn about all that live there and the issues they face – plastic, chemicals, sewage. What can we do to help?

What are the issues?

The Marine Conservation Society website contains lots of information and lesson plans to support learning about our coast.

Visit the Rampion windfarm website for resources, activities, and careers advice.

Local organisations and campaigns

Visit the Sussex Wildlife Trust website to find out about local issues and how to get involved.

Learn about the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project and why kelp is so important. Sussex Underwater monitor how the kelp is recovering in our Marine Protected Areas to provide evidence that the trawler ban is helping nature recovery in these important areas.

The Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme

The Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme works to collect and recycle discarded fishing gear from our beaches. They have fishing gear recycling bins on beaches along the coast for people to deposit any they find. The fishing gear is then recycled into a plastic board which is used to make long life products such as benches or planters by the charity ReAP UK. Watch how they do it on ReAP’s website.

Steve Tapp is always happy to visit schools and speak to groups about marine plastics. Contact Steve on steveanlrs@gmail.com

Seahaven Academy and Peacehaven Community School have both adopted a line recycling bin near them. The contents of each bin is audited and the school receives a breakdown of the types of plastic collected. The schools will receive a bench or planter for the school made from plastics retrieved from our beaches.

Plastic Free Seaford

Plastic Free Seaford runs projects and campaigns to raise awareness about the impacts of plastics and how to reduce their use.
